Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
