In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
